Proud Bull Barrenground Caribou During late summer and early autumn every year, an estimated 3.5 million barrenground caribou - in five major herds and several sub-herds - migrate from their respective calving grounds on the tundra to the wintering grounds near the tree-line and then back again in the Spring. The Beverly herd, one of the largest and least human-influenced of these caribou is estimated at nearly 400,000 (+/-) animals. As this major herd is one of the least hunted by humans and thus not as subject to selective trophy hunting, encountering bulls with huge racks such as this one is commonplace on a Great Canadian Wilderness Caribou viewing expedition into the late summer domain of the Beverly herd.
