Book Review:

'Caribou and the North - A shared Future'

In the autumn of 2008, a wonderful new book about caribou was released; co-written by Monty Hummel: President of the World Wildlife Fund Canada & Dr. Justina C. Ray: Executive Director of Wildlife Conservation Society Canada. This high-profile book includes a forward by Robert Redford and sketches by renowned artist Robert Bateman.

This unique book offers an in-depth treatise of the history and current conservation issues surrounding the northern caribou herds, and the intricate relationship between caribou, carnivores, and the northern indigenous peoples. A must-read for all interested and concerned in the fate of our North American wildlife.

Imagine our surprise and pleasure to discover that over 20 of the quality photos in this new book (including the cover photo) were taken by our Great Canadian Wilderness clients during various wildlife trips that we "facilitated" to remote regions of the Northwest Territories & Nunavut over the past two decades. Some of these clients include::

-US Photographer Steven Barger - whose photos taken during our 'Dance with Caribou' trip graces the book cover, as well does several prints in the book itself;

Andrew Leith MaCrae - who joined us for a 'Dance with Caribou' expedition 1999

Julie Yamaguchi - who was with us for a 'Dance with Caribou' trip in 2004

Alex Kammer - on a 'Dance with Caribou' expedition with his brothers Andy & Arron in 2004

Michael Lookman - 'Dance with Caribou' in 2004

Glen & Rebecca Grambo - first as a client, and then while working with us on the field for the 'Dance with Caribou' & 'Great Summer Caribou Migration' trips in 2003, 2004 & 2005

Adele Curtis - while on 'Dance with Caribou' expeditions with us in 2003 & 2004

Paul Zakora - 'Great Summer Caribou Migration' - working with us during filming of the BBC film documentary project 'Caribou & Wolves - the Endless Dance' with Jeff Turner & River Road Films during 2003 & 2004.
