Explorer & Fly- Fisherman 'extrordinaire'

Dr. Ron Burmeister

Dr. Ron Burmeister - now retired - worked for over thirty-five years as a obstetrican gynecologist in Rockford, Illinois. Over those years, he joined several of our trips to the North - initally for fishing, and then more recently for fly-fishing & wildlife viewing combined. Ron came north with us five times beginning in 1988, 89, 91, 2004 and 2009, to many of our different camps including Lynx Tundra Lodge, Talston Bay Outpost, and Whitefish Lake on the upper Thelon River. Ron's most recent trip was in 2009 to our 'Dance with Caribou' trip to the Chesterfield Inlet area in Nunavut.

Ron''s deep Christian values has led him to write articles about the spiritual element of his northern Arctic adventures: see links below!

Ron Burmeister had this to say about his many trips with us to the Far North:

Dr. Ron Burmeister fishing for big pike at Talston Bay on Great Slave Lake
"My experience in the Arctic began in 1988 when I booked a fishing trip with my uncle who knew Steve Lybeck from childhood. We fished Lynx Lake with Tom and Steve with outstanding results. Thus began a series of trips to Lynx, Whitefish, Great Slave, and finally to Nunavut, all organized by the Arctic legend, Tom Faess."
"Each of the five excursions has its own story and adventure, but Tom (and sometimes Steve and others) were always there to provide excellent food, good camaraderie, excellent services, and safety in the wilderness that made each trip memorable."

"My recent trip this August (2009) to the Nunavut Territory was the most unique, camping on an idyllic bay with caribou, musk ox, peregrine falcons, and a host of other creatures including lake trout to keep us enthralled..."

"..not to mention perfectly clear weather to view and photograph the spectacular northern lights each night."

I was accompanied by a professional wildlife photographer whose practiced eye opened many vistas I had not seen before. Again, Steve MacLachlan, Steve Lybeck, and Tom provided excellent service and helped us to understand more clearly how special the tundra, its history, and the aboriginal people who live there really are.

I consider it holy land and cannot wait for my next opportunity to visit this magic place..."
