2009 & 2010 Nunavut Wildlife Camp
Following several reconn flights for wildlife over the course of two-weeks leading to the special 'Caribou, Autumn Colours & Aurora' expeditions, this unique and beautiful camp location was chosen upon discovery of large musk-oxen herds and consistant caribou migration activity nearby. As seen from the photo above taken in September 2009 by client Barry Girard, the camp site was situated on a protected bay on the North Channel of Chesterfield Inlet some 90 kilometers east of the remote community of Baker Lake - essentially where the Thelon River meets the salt waters of Northern Hudson Bay. Special permission to use this site had to be obtained from the local Inuit, who consider this area to be of important heritage value to thier unique culture. The photo below was taken in August 2009 by client/photographer David C. Olson of the main wildlife camp set up for the 'Caribou, Autumn Colours & Aurora' expeditions. The camp offered a kitchen dining room, a central washouse/dry, a field shower, and an outdoor latrine that had to be propped up to keep it from tipping in the howling winds that occassionally blew in from the North. Sleeping accommodations were in large North Face dome and Cabella tents equipped with sleeping cots. The camp also featured two power boats, a motorized rubber dingy, and a full-time Cessna float-equipped aircraft kept on-site for wildlfe reconnisiance and in case of any emergencies. Communications with the 'outside world' were maintained by portable satellite telephones. |
